Pedagogy Options - Individual
Private lessons outside the orchestra classroom are highly recommended. Different options are available, suitable for all family budgets.
High School Student Teachers
Ask Mrs. Miltun for a reference/match to a MISD high school student who is an advanced orchestra student willing to give lessons. Lesson fee will be a fraction of a lesson cost.
Coaching from Mrs. Miltun and Community Volunteers
Please inquire with Mrs. Miltun.
Pedagogy Opportunities - Orchestra and Ensemble
Mrs. Miltun is the sole director and teacher of all 6 orchestras.
With the occasional grant and mostly donations from families, she hires a coach and depends on volunteer community musicians. The more money we raise, the more coaching - the Program's top priority - we can provide to our student musicians on a one-on-one basis and in ensembles.
An incredibly rich way to learn is to teach others.
At school, student teaching and coaching are encouraged:
- Between and among seat partners. Mrs. Miltun often changes students' seating so that students with certain strengths (e.g. sight reading or rhythm) can symbiotically learn from each other
- Teacher assistant opportunities begin in the 8th grade
Outside school, students may be referred by Mrs. Miltun to teach other Mercer Island orchestra students for a nominal lesson fee.
